Magical tour with Devon

We booked this tour the night before arriving to Dominica and were worried when we contacted both Viator and the number for the tour operator and got no response. I also emailed and sent messages through the chat and nada. Disembarked at the port and approached some taxis and they called the number and talked to Devon, who happened to be our tour operator and megastar! Also he had not been informed that he had a tour to give and we literally got him out of bed. LOL. What started as a sketchy booking ended up with an amazing drive through the mountains of Dominica visiting waterfalls and mountains. We were practically the only ones in the lake kayaking. We enjoyed the serenity and quiet. Then Devon had us made a creole breakfast with “cocotee” (hot chocolate with coconut milk). Then went to what I think was the highlight of our tour: this amazing grotto where you have to literally plunge in ice cold water and swim against the current in between these cavernous walls (see pics). It sounds dangerous and crazy but life jackets are mandatory and if you follow instructions, it’s very safe and you will not drown. For context, I’m asthmatic and I was able to do it by staying a bit under water to climatize my body to the temperature and then swim carefully. Devon actually swam in first and he would help us get in and reach final destination. We felt totally safe! Devon was caring and so funny. It was obvious that everyone knows him and we were in the hands of a very seasoned tour operator. Flexible too. We made our own schedule based on Devon’s recommendations. It was ideal. What a magical place!
